Flex Your Boobies

SonyaM-19.jpg

You read that right. I said, “Flex your boobies.”

I remember a day my oldest returned from daycare proudly flexing her biceps. “See that, Mom?” She smiled widely as she tried with all her might to squeeze her bicep muscle until the smallest bump appeared.

“Wow, Lil.” I touched my finger to her tiny contraction. “That’s impressive. Where’d you learn to do that?”

Her eyes lit up. “We were flexing our muscles in daycare today. Pretty good, huh?”

“You bet.” I smiled.
But despite her excitement, her eyes darted to the side and her head lowered. She crawled over to my ear, putting her little hand up to block her words as she began to whisper.

“One of the boys in my class can even flex his boobies.”

I lost it. I laughed so hard tears spilled down my cheeks. I don’t know if it was the fact I’d worked too much or was running on fumes from fitful sleep, but whatever the cause, I couldn’t stop the laughter as it burst from my chest. Of course she meant his pecs, but in her young mind, her friend was talented enough to flex his boobies. When my breath finally returned, I looked at her seriously as the realization hit me.

“Lil, you didn’t flex your boobies, did you?”

She smiled. The smallest dimple formed in the center of her little round cheek. “No, Mom. That would be unladylike.”

You might be wondering where I’m going with this, how the story of my child’s misunderstanding could warrant enough to write an entire blog post about living THE LIVE JOY LIFE. I can tell you in one word.

LAUGHTER

As adults, and especially women, we are so preoccupied with the craziness of the day that we forget to find time to laugh and to find humor in the small things. We don’t allow our bodies to laugh until our abs ache or to giggle until the tears stream down our faces, not caring if our mascara comes trickling down too.

Laughter is lovely and beautiful. It’s primitive and healing. Laughter and joy must co-exist. It is physiologically impossible to be laughing and not feel joy. As the Psalmist tells us in 126:2, “when our mouths are filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy.”

Fear, worry, anxiety - no negative emotion - can withstand the power of laughter.

Make time to laugh today. Find a funny video. Relax enough to allow the ramblings of your children to tickle your funny bone.

Don’t take life, or yourself, so seriously, Sister! LAUGH.
